Veggies For The Fun of It: 10 Tips for a Successful Urban Garden Program for Kids

My goal in working with a children's gardening programs is to open their eyes to a world within the outdoor class space which is filled with flowers and try to make the experience an event they will long remember.

When working with an urban gardening program for elementary school age kids, it is important to understand what will make a successful vegetable gardening program for children. One must first realize a child's gardening goals differ from those of adult. Middle school and high school gardening programs differs than those for younger children in methods and presented curricula. Kids' primary objective in gardening is discovery and experimentation. In other words they don't measure success by the quantity or quality of a harvest; it is the reward in experiencing the process. Kids will use all five senses to explore and discover the garden setting. Vegetable gardening for children will not only stimulate their senses but build a lifelong connection with nature, healthier choices and caring for our environment. Children are curious about the wonders of nature; they like to learn by doing, and will love to play in a garden space designed with them in mind. A kid friendly gardening program should be presented and planned as a fun learning activity surrounded by a world of discoveries. Whether you work with one child or a dozen of them, you'll find these tips helpful to customize your gardening program.

As mentioned earlier, children's interest in gardening is different from those of adults. Adult's aspiration in vegetable gardening is grouped into three categories all based on the "green thumb factor" they are; a sustainable source of fresh produce, the economic factor, health and organic nutrition. These three goals can be incorporated into a curriculum for a balanced children's gardening program. When presenting gardening curriculum it works best when presented as "teaching moments."

Define the goals for forming this young gardeners club. What do you hope to accomplish in this gardening situation? Will it be a place for quiet meditation, teaching science, creating a farmers market or a venue for healthy eating? Knowing this will help guide you in deciding the type of garden environment to create, such as native plant, heirloom, organic, herbal or exhibition.

Rely on the experts.Borrow gardening rules, tips and techniques from successful community gardening program in your area. The most successful community type gardens are supported by an involved group of people. This is the time to pull together a group of like-minded teachers, and helpers from your circle of influence. Local Master Gardeners, Farm Bureaus, botanic and organic garden organizations and nurseries can provide guidance and support.

Give the kids their own garden space for the principle of possession. This will give the children a sense of 'ownership' of a familiar space and encourages a commitment and responsibility to the gardening project. Whether you use raised beds, repurposed containers or a traditional ground plot, be sure to give children their own separate garden space and encourage them to get their hands dirty.

Make the garden appealing to the senses, Colorful blooms adds to the visual; aromatic crops that appeal to the nose as well as produce that can be eaten off the vine.Choose a variety of vegetable plants well-suited to your region and growing season. It would also be great to include a few edible flowers for color and herbs for fragrance.Children will be fascinated by the different shapes and textures. To get off to a good start plant easy-to-grow vegetables such as cucumbers, collard greens, zucchini, leaf lettuce, beans, peas, summer squash, bell peppers and Swiss chard are all easy to grow.

Set young gardeners up for success with the best soil and light conditions available. This is part of the planning strategy. In urban settings it is common to find predicaments such as poor soil conditions; pollutant, gardening in awkwardly shaped areas surrounded by asphalt or cement. Remember most vegetable gardens requires at least six to eight hours of sunlight each day. It is also helpful to have easy access to water.Don't be discouraged if your garden site has too many obstacles it is possibly a sign that you should consider container gardening.

Start the garden from seeds. Children will learn more by seeing the growing process as it begins. This is an important part of the discovery process; they will notice the root system and make their own observations on plant development and life cycles. The care given to sprouting seeds and nurturing the young seedling are a valuable part of the gardening experience. Also seeds will develop into healthier plants if started indoors in a warm room. Once the true leaves have sprouted they can be transplanted into the garden bed according growing season.

You may need to help out 'behind the scene, 'cheat a little'. They don't have to know about every small issue you've corrected. You may need to go out before or after the program's session to pick slugs and insects off the vegetables.Regularly patrol for pests, but do not use pesticides. Children should not be exposed to toxins. Instead, remove bugs by blasting them with water. Change a few plants that were severely damaged due to mishandling; replace seeds in beds that were improperly planted. The kids feeling a sense of ownership in the plot is the primary thing. A good result in gardening solely based on the children's efforts is secondary.

Use alloted time wisely. Have a set start and ending time for the sessions. Change up the activity to keep kids excited about going to the garden. Garden time for children should be in the cool of the day. Include garden themed activities, games and craft time in your program. Keep in mind kids may not be ready at all times for all chores in the garden. All children may not enjoy all garden tasks. There are some who will not enjoy the process of planting outside in the dirt, even those who may be frightened by insects. The incorporation of garden themed activities will give your children a needed variety. This will insure children will look forward to the future sessions and positively impact behavior

Gardening tools and gear are necessity. When you supply children with tools you're acknowledging the importance of the work they're doing. Also under the category of gardening tools, there are many kitchen objects that can be repurposed for gardening use. Hard plastic kitchen utensils make excellent garden tools; they can be used like a shovel or spade. We use drinking water bottles for watering containers. If need be let them use your hand tools under close supervision. The uses of cheap plastic gardening tools are worse than no tools at all; they break easily and will discourage any user.

Engage them through the entire process, from seed to table. The garden is a place for teaching moments with kids. Children learn better when they understand the context of their activity. They will learn that gardening is a fun activity, a place to make friends, as well as a place where they are contributing to the community. Gardening gives children a chance to learn an important life skill, one that is overlooked in standard school curriculums. Gardening is also a great way to teach environmental awareness by exploring the workings of nature. Environmental sciences Plant life cycles and seed germination are easily taught in the outdoor classroom. So are math, creative writing, reading, social studies, nutrition, observation and the fine arts. Besides planting and nurturing their garden beds, be sure they are an active part the harvesting and preparation of their vegetables for the table, no matter how modest the crop yield.

A children's vegetable garden will open their minds to a 'world class' learning experience about plants and flowers.

Top Three Tips in Finding the Right Toys For Kids

If you are a parent, doting aunt or uncle, older sibling, family friend, or do-gooder who simply wants to make a tiny tot happy, you may have experienced or are experiencing dilemmas when it comes to finding the right toys for children. There are plenty of children's toys lined up in store shelves and neatly stacked on display tables that choosing ones that are safe, age-appropriate, enjoyable and educational can be very challenging.

Different kids have different interests, and different toys match different age groups. With a multitude of options and factors to consider, searching for the right toy can become a tedious task instead of an exciting activity. Now, where do you begin?

Toys are meant to be fun items to play with, so scouting for them must also be a fun event. Buying playthings for kids can be truly entertaining as long as you know what to look for. Take time to think about what kind of toy you wish to give a youngster. A little wisdom goes a long way when it comes to giving toys to little ones. Read on for the top three tips in finding the right toys for kids.

Tip #1: Safety always comes first.

Toys, first and foremost, must be safe for kids to play with. Consider toys that are age-appropriate so it will be easier for you to identify the different health hazards.

Toys with small, detachable parts are dangerous for very small children who might swallow and choke on them. Also, avoid giving pointed toys to small kids. Children like running around and pointed objects can cause serious accidents. While bigger children can already play with toys made of very tough materials, opt for softer, flexible toys for tiny tots.

Steer clear of toys that have harmful chemicals. Many small kids like putting things into their mouth that is why toys must always be free of poisonous substances. When a toy is coated with paint, make sure that the paint is non-toxic.

Tip #2: Think of the toy's developmental value.

Find toys that are both entertaining and developmental. Such toys help kids improve their mental, motor, and social skills. Educational toys sharpen kids' minds as they play and encourage them to think critically and logically. Arts and crafts help youngsters express themselves and practice their creativity. Toys for kids that involve movement, like toddler cubes and magnetic games, practice children's motor skills.

Look for toys that teach children the value of self-reliance, teamwork and sharing. Playing is a great family bonding activity, and it becomes even more so with toys that develop children's knowledge, attitudes, and practices.

Tip #3: Make sure you get value for your money.

Finding the right toys involves getting items that will last a long time. Go for quality instead of quantity. Look for toys that are made of durable materials that will not easily tear or break. Durable toys are great picks because they can be passed on to younger family members. Additionally, choose toys that can hold children's interest and attention so they will be played with often.

Do not make a beeline for the most expensive toys because a heavy price tag does not always assure quality. Also think twice when hoarding toys that are on sale. Cheap toys that are made of inferior materials can get destroyed quickly and are not really bargains in the long run. Good finds are toys for kids that will give you your money's worth.

The Right Way to Organize Parties For Children

Children love to get together and have fun with other children of their same age group. It is fun to see them when they are totally not aware of what else is happening in the world and they enjoy as much as they can. Organising parties for children is of a major concern for many of us, as kids are always looking for fun and a simple party with no fun will simply bore them.

As you start planning for the party, the first and the foremost task is to look for a perfect place to hold the party. It could be your own backyard, inside your house, play areas for kids, etc. but you should keep in mind the number of children attending your party because you surely do not want to run out of space as it will become too crowded if you choose a smaller space.

The second step is to decide upon a theme. It could be a costume party, one dish party, animal theme based party, Disneyland, etc. Everyone knows that kids love to get dressed up as their favourite cartoon characters, so why not give it a try at your child's party.

You can make your party as lavish as you want so that the kids always remember how much fun they had. But at the same time do not forget to pre determine a budget which you must strictly follow. It is obvious that you want your party to be fun and unique but at the same time you do not want to get bankrupt just for the sake of a party for your kid.

Make invitation cards and a list of guests who you want to invite. It is crucial to remember not to invite children randomly as it can be extremely embarrassing for you if you forget to invite your child's best friend. Besides, making guest list helps you in estimating the space you will need to cater for the kids.

Children love to eat, especially if they are given candies and snacks which are their favourite food items. Make up your mind how you want the food to be served: distributing snack packs or serving the food in dishes, so that everyone gets as much food as they want. Keep the drinks chilled and use packed juices in order to make sure that the children do not spill it in your house. At the same time, avoid giving too much junk food to the kids by adding vegetables and fruits in the menu.

At last, add lots of fun and exciting games for the children. There are many party games for kids such as spin the bottle, pass the pillow, pin the donkey tail, etc. which are loved by almost all the kids. You can also try new games which the kids might find interesting.

In short, organising a children's party may sound an easy task but in reality it is way too difficult and complicated as it constantly requires the presence of adults to supervise so that nothing goes wrong. Setting a budget and planning out a theme are also important, apart from choosing the perfect place for the event.

Kid's Ideas Are Winners

One of the best ideas for making a fun school program is to listen to the kids. Children have very active imaginations and they are not shy about expressing their ideas. If you are open to their ideas you can give your programs zip and humor. It also gives the children ownership to the program. Here are a few ideas that the students have come up with in some of my programs.

INSERT A COMMERCIAL. Our children are bombarded with commercials and they can sing most of the jingles from memory. One year I had 3 boys that felt our program needed some spicing up and they suggested the old Wendy's commercial "Where's the Beef". They dressed up as three little old ladies and brought the house down with laughter.

SHY STUDENTS--One shy student wanted to be front and center on stage and speak, but he didn't want anyone to see him. He came as the unknown comic with a sack over his head with holes cut for his eyes.

STROBE LIGHTS--The students came up with many ideas to use a strobe light. A baseball game, a wrestling match, a cop chasing the bad guy.

BLACK LIGHTS--Some girls suggested the use of black lights for a rock and roll song. They wore white shirts, white socks, and white hair ribbons. The black lights became so popular that they would make up other dances . Once they were used with white gloves and sign language.

TUMBLING--A group of students suggested putting mats across the front of the stage and doing tumbling routines to modern music. Cheerleading became popular and they were used for that.

SINGING---When two girls had to sing a sad song about having no friends they suggested sitting on the piano like the professional singers do.

SONGS---For Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer the students suggested having one prop that they could use and do the silly part of the song such as "Dumbo" "Monopoly".
You know the part that irritates music directors and teachers. So they made something in the shape of a giant 1 foot light bulb, with a small knob on the handle, that was yellow on one side and gray on one side. They used it for the light bulb, for an elephants trunk for Dumbo, a monopoly piece, and the knob was glittered red for Rudolph nose.

COSTUMES---Students ideas for costumes can save a lot of time. They were always to keep them to only things that they had at home and not ask mom for anything else. They used mops for hair, Styrofoam balls for noses, cowboy hats for a western, tinsel for belts, glitter to make them sparkle under the lights.

Take a chance and ask the students what actions they could use. Keep a careful watch on the class show off because they will come up with actions that are winners in a program, but problems in the classroom. It is their chance to shine.

Internet Safety For Kids - Tips For Parents' Peace of Mind

The newest concern for parents is Internet safety for kids. Children are growing up with information at their fingertips, but many of the places they go on-line are not safe. Chat rooms can expose children to unsavory ideas, and many other websites regularly collect information from children about their parents, their schools, and even their addresses.

Unfortunately, this is just the beginning. Pedophiles are attracted to kids's websites too, and regularly try to lure kids into meeting them in real life. There have been many abduction cases that resulted in child molestation and even child pornography.

The facts of on-line child abuse are hard to face, but parents can be relieved to know that there are many ways to improve Internet safety for kids. As with all child safety precautions, it is best to work actively with children so they can learn how to navigate the world's traps and tricks when they are on their own.

In a perfect world, parents will always be able to monitor what their children see on-line, but of course this is next to impossible. By following the tips below, parents can gain more control of what their children see on the internet, and also rest assured that their kids will know what to do if accosted on-line.

The big picture is to agree on some "house rules" for using the Internet. Even better is to make a pact with them about on-line behavior. Here are some common rules many parents make for kids:

1. Never give your personal information on-line, including real name, address, and school. If any webpage asks for information, check with parents' first.

2. No meeting with people from chat rooms - unless parents' agree. Also, parents' should arrange to go with them to a first meeting.

3. Never send picture of yourself to others.

4. Never download any software with parental permission.

Further protection is to keep the computer in the family room, rather than in the children's bedroom. Or, agree on times when they are allowed to surf the Internet, so they can be monitored from a distance.

Kids want freedom of information, too, despite legitimate parental concerns for their safety. Often it is difficult to monitor them directly, so consider these tactics:

1. Check the Internet history weekly by clicking on preferences for most browsers.

2. Enable parental controls on search results for Google and the other main search engines.

3. Invest in software that tracks Internet history and also bars web pages that may be unsafe.

It is unfortunate that parents have to balance their children's trust with concerns for their safety, so I always recommend that the above tactics are used only as a "last defense."

Since the Online Children's Protection Act of 1998, websites that request information for children under the age of 13 have to get parental permission first.

This is the first step towards a safer Internet, but the on-line world is still crawling with predators. And kids regularly perform searches that accidentally result in child pornography websites. If this happens, report the page immediately to the national child pornography hotline by calling 1-800-843-5678.

Children may never be completely safe on the Internet. However, by becoming more involved with children's interests on-line, parents not only are making their kids safer, but also building stronger and more trusting relationships. Monitoring your kids may be inevitable, but the best approach for improving internet safety is not to just make rules, but to instill real values that stick.
