Believe it or not, the saying "All work and no play, makes John a dumb boy" is so true. It has been said that play is the child's version of work. Therefore, it is the right of every child to play by himself or with other child playmates, as well as play with their own parents.
Research has proven that it is important for parents to spend quality playtime with their kids. The fact of the matter is, children want to spend time with their parents. When parents spend time with their kids, children feel extra special.
It is therefore encouraged that parents spend playtime with their kids regularly.
Pretend play with your kids:
In the game pretend play, let kids develop their own themes. It would be best if parents get into the world of their kids. Play with the kids. Ask them questions, go along with what they want to do and where they want to go. Let the kids have fun.
However, also remember that over-stimulating your child should be avoided. Know when playing should be stopped.
Using stuffed toy animals or play puppets to show and act out situations that the kids see in real life is an effective way to teach social skills and problem solving techniques.
As an example, use the puppets in order to demonstrate the incorrect way to handle a particular situation. Then, let your child put his own input as to the correct way to do it.
Play outdoor games with your kids:
It is always best if you and your kids play together outdoors. Throw balls together with your kids. Help your kids make pies from the mud. Hike in the neighborhood together. Take a brief nature walk in the comfort of your own backyard.
Playing board and card games is one option. Games such as these help your kids learn the process of taking turns as well as on the art of losing and winning. Praise your kids, encourage your children and laugh sincerely with your child.
Do craft together:
Getting involved with your kids in doing crafts is one way to bond with your kids and have fun with them. Building a large jigsaw puzzle with your family is one example, as well as baking cookies or painting a picture.
Listen and sing along together:
Singing with your kids is a fun way to get together. Play drums together or any instrument you know or your kids want to learn. Get the piano out or play the guitar.
Read together:
Reading a book together is another option you could take. Read to them aloud. This encourages your kids to ask different questions. It also helps their imagination to be creative.
Watch fun movies together:
Know what your kids want to watch. Know what it is they like. Discover what their interests are. Try to answer your kids questions or for any content that they could not understand.
Always be there to help:
As much as possible, when the kids ask for your advise, use that situation to teach them problem solving skills, patience, creativity and social skills. Games such as following the leader, hide and seek are some traditional and tried-tested ways to have good, safe and clean fun.
All in all, a good tip is to love your children, and playing with them is just one of the ways for you to express this.
